Are you Okay?
This work is a flurry of emotions, volatile and colorful. I started this piece in a strange and somewhat uncomfortable setting much different than my usual studio environment. I was invited by a romantic interest at the time to paint at a friend’s house with a few other people. We were both painters and another attendee’s energy was very judgmental. I felt like I was being watched, trying to perform for the room rather than create at ease. I purged all the nervousness, anxiety, and tension onto the canvas.
This is a painting from an earlier period and was my very first work experimenting with oil paints. It’s funny to look back on this painting and at the young mental state I was in as a nineteen year old. To feel extremely vulnerable and yet still choose to be myself, to show I felt in that moment rather than feigning a skull or knife or some other edgy motif to impress the group. Its one of the first times I believe I did that for myself and really set myself free. I am super proud of this piece and what is stands for in my personal development.
